Well, the answer you’re looking for isn’t very concrete. It all depends on what you are looking for, and what your workout goals are. There are a lot of factors that affect the cost of dumbbells.

The objective of this article is to outline the factors that affect the cost of dumbbells, both industry-wide and specifically sold at Akfit, so you can have a better idea on how to narrow down your dumbbell purchasing decisions.

What are Dumbbells and How Are They Used?

Dumbbells are a type of free weight fitness equipment used for strength training. The amount of basic exercises that can be performed with dumbbells are endless. You can strengthen nearly all your muscles with different dumbbell workouts.

There are two primary different types of dumbbells:

    1.       Fixed weight dumbbells
    2.       Adjustable dumbbells

Fixed weight dumbbells are weights that are fixated into a dumbbell shape. They feature a handle in the middle with weight on both sides. These dumbbells are usually made of plastic, concrete, cast iron, urethane or rubber. Some fixed weight dumbbells may also include a knurl grip on the middle handle as well.

Adjustable dumbbells come in a variety of different ways. The most common adjustable dumbbell you will see is a center metal bar, often with a knurling grip and adjustable plates on the side with collars to lock them into place. For more information on the cost of adjustable plates, check out our cost of a steel weight plate article.

Another type of adjustable dumbbells are “selectorized” adjustable dumbbells such as powerblocks for example.  The amount of weight can be easily changed when the dumbbell is resting. This is done by adjusting the number of plates that follow the handle when lifted, by turning a dial, or moving a selector pin rather than adding or removing plates yourself.

    Factors That Impact the Cost

When it comes to purchasing your dumbbells, there are a variety of factors that impact how much you may need to spend to reach your goals. There is no concrete price that is the same for every dumbbell.

    Weight

If you are purchasing singular dumbbells, specifically fixed weight dumbbells, the overall weight will affect the cost. Generally the heavier the dumbbell, the more expensive it will be.

However, this general rule doesn’t always apply, as some brands have an area in the 40-50 pound ranger where you can find cheaper dumbbells than if you were just a little above or below that weight mark.

Overall though, this rule applies crawling up from one pound to higher. On average, a new set of dumbbells will cost you anywhere from $1.50 to $4 per pound. But this can also vary (again) based on brand, but also the style of dumbbell and the materials used.

    New vs Used

Second-hand equipment is generally always cheaper than something that is brand new.

The main concern though, when it comes to used equipment is the durability of it. If you purchase a set of dumbbells that have a lot of wear and tear and are in bad shape it may not be worth your investment and also may not be worth compromising your safety.

It is always best to do your research before you invest in used equipment. However, you can always get lucky and find a hidden gem when it comes to buying anything that is second-hand.

    The Volume of Dumbbells

This goes without saying, the more dumbbells you purchase, the more it will cost you. If you are looking to invest in strength training, you’ll most likely want to invest in a set of dumbbells rather than investing in a single pair, or maybe you may want to invest in adjustable dumbbells.

Regardless, adjustable dumbbells, and a set of dumbbells will cost you more than a singular pair. If you’re on a budget, you may want to invest in adjustable dumbbells compared to a full set. If you are looking at investing in just a single pair, then you may find yourself purchasing heavier dumbbells in the future to adjust with your weight training goals.

Another factor to consider is storing your dumbbells. If you are investing in a set or have built up a set over time, you may need to invest in a rack or a shelf to hold all your weights.

    Materials

The materials your dumbbells are made of factor into the cost a lot. Dumbbells that are made of rigid plastic and filled with concrete are usually the most cost-friendly. These dumbbells may also be less accurate in their measured weight, and also are less durable.

Cast-iron dumbbells are considered another cost-effective option for investing in a set of dumbbells. They have a simplistic look to them, and are more accurate than cheaper concrete and plastic weights. The main issues you will run into these however is that they are less forgiving on your floor compared to rubber dumbbells, and the paint may wear off after significant use.

The most expensive type of dumbbells you’ll find on the market are usually urethane dumbbells. These types of dumbbells are usually found in college and high-end commercial gyms.

Why are urethane dumbbells so expensive? Urethane is a denser and high quality material than for dumbbells. They have a nice sleek look to them, but they’re very durable and will last much longer than a rubber dumbbell for example.

A 25 lbs pair of urethane dumbbells from Rogue will cost you about $164. Compared to Rogue’s rubber hex 25 lbs pair of dumbbells which cost around $71.

    Adjustable vs Non-Adjustable

If you are looking at investing into a full set of dumbbells for your home gym, but may not be able to afford it just yet, a good compromise is purchasing adjustable dumbbells.

Adjustable dumbbells will cost you less than a full set, and are very portable so you can bring your weight training workouts on the road with you. For example: At Akfit, Powerblock’s Pro EXP Urethane Adjustable 5-50 lbs set will cost you $788. While York’s Black Rubber 5-50 lbs dumbbell set costs $1,198.

The downside is that with the bulky makeup that adjustable dumbbells present, your range of movements you can perform won’t be as versatile as having a full set of fixed-weight dumbbells on hand.

    Brand

Reputable brands offer dumbbells that usually guarantee durability and quality. They are reputable for a reason after all, however while some brands may be associated with higher costs, it doesn’t mean these reputable brands still don’t provide some cost friendly options as well. Some reputable brands focus on dumbbells built on specific materials compared to others.

Purchasing from non-reputable brands may be easier on your wallet, but you ultimately get what you pay for. Investing in non-reputable products can run the risk of receiving an item that isn’t very durable.

You don’t want to be purchasing dumbbells based on brand alone, it’s important to speak with an expert regarding brands if you are shopping in a store. At Akfit, you can also contact us, or book a meeting with our fitness specialists to discuss which set of dumbbells may be right for you.
