    TREADMILL BUYERS GUIDE

Treadmill Motors: Everything You Need To Know

One of the most important parts of your treadmill is the motor. The motor is a central hub of your treadmill and does the majority of the heavy lifting when your treadmill is operating. However, not all treadmill motors are the same.

Woman Running on Quality Motorized Treadmill

There are two different types of motors found in treadmills: Direct Current Motors (also known as DC motors) and Alternative Current Motors (also known as AC motors).

    Direct Current Driven Motors

DC motors are most commonly found in treadmills built for home use. These motors convert direct electrical energy into mechanical energy. DC motors tend to start slower than AC motors but provide a consistent response to speed and incline adjustments. They are also built with fewer internal parts than AC motors, which could save you some coin if your motor is in need of replacement.

DC motors also tend to run quieter compared to AC motors.

    Alternative Current Motors

AC motors are electrical motors that produce mechanical energy by using alternative current combined with magnetism. These types of motors are more commonly found in commercial treadmills and will generally start your walking belt up at a quicker speed compared to DC motors. While they start off stronger, a treadmill with an AC motor is still safe for you to plug directly into an outlet at home.

    How Much Horsepower is Necessary?

There are different ways of measuring treadmill horsepower. The type you should pay most attention to is what is referred to as Continuous Horsepower (CHP), as this is what the motor will be able to maintain for the duration of any workout.

For a long-term return on investment, a 3.0 CHP motor within your treadmill is the most appropriate. However, a general rule to follow is that if you weigh over 200 pounds and plan to use your treadmill regularly, you should find a treadmill with a motor that provides an extra 0.5 HP. Alternatively, if your treadmill is not going to be used heavily or frequently, you can still get away with a lower HP.

Generally the amount of horsepower you will need is as follows:

    • 2.0 HP: A motor this low in horsepower on continuous duty should only be used for walking.
    • 2.5 HP: A motor with 2.5 HP on continuous duty can suffice for joggers.
    • 3.0 HP: The recommended amount of horsepower on continuous duty for your treadmill if you plan to use it for running.
A common misconception is that you need to have a treadmill motor with more than 3.0 HP to use it for running. This is not true! As long as you have a 3.0 HP continuous duty motor for your treadmill and you weigh under 200 pounds, this amount of HP will work.

Regardless of what type of motor you choose, you should be properly maintaining your treadmill to increase the longevity of your motor including ordering regular preventative maintenance and applying lubricant to the belt to reduce strain on the motor. Neglect will be the first reason why your motor won’t function properly. You can find a selection of appropriate treadmill lube right here in our treadmill category!

What Factors Impact the Price of a Treadmill?

As one of the most common types of cardio equipment, treadmills bring a wide variety of benefits, from burning calories to increasing your lung and heart health. However when it comes to the cost, the price can vary.

    Features

This may seem obvious, but a treadmill that includes more features is likely to cost you more than a treadmill that doesn’t have as many options. These features could include a variety of settings such as different speed and incline levels. Additionally, some treadmills have more unique features such as the size of the console on the treadmill, which can display different workout videos or even stream a variety of entertainment options. Some treadmills have consoles that just simply record data such as distance travelled, your speed, and your heart rate. Another feature to take into consideration is if the treadmill folds or not, as something that is easier to pack away may increase the cost.

    Manual or Electronic

When you think of picking between a manual or electronic treadmill, you may be wondering what a manual treadmill is in the first place. These are not machines that you plug in and there are little to no additional programs included. The manual treadmill operates solely by you pushing the belt beneath your feet at your own pace. There is no motor or flywheel. These treadmills aren’t very common and only offer the most basic of cardio workout experiences.

However, at AKFIT we do offer some higher end manual models such as the AirRunner from Assault Fitness. This type of manual treadmill offers a curved running surface for a more natural running feel, and should not be lumped in with what is otherwise a very entry level category.

    Accessibility and Delivery

Depending on which treadmill you are buying, and where you are purchasing it from, you could very well find yourself spending extra money on shipping. Akfit is a Canadian specialty fitness store and we are located in Sudbury, Ontario. Visit us in store to minimize these costs.

Another thing to consider is that some treadmills are bigger and heavier than others, while some require more assembly than others. If you are buying a used treadmill, you may be able to skip these steps, however when buying used equipment you need to be wary of what you may be purchasing. Make sure you are getting exactly what you are looking for if you decide to go this route.

    New vs. Used

Investing in any used fitness equipment could save you some extra cash in the short term, but you want to make sure you are asking yourself some key questions to make sure you are receiving the equipment that you deserve to enjoy. Make sure that when you are looking into your treadmill investment decisions that your treadmill is in good condition, is produced by a reputable manufacturer, and all the parts are included. You need to know that the equipment operates safely, and make sure to compare it to what is already on the market.

    Materials and Construction

Another factor that could affect the cost of your treadmill is the materials and construction of the equipment. Treadmills that may cost more would be machines that feature a good quality belt, a strong sturdy frame, strong treadmill elevation brackets, and a quality motor. These are just some parts that can affect the cost of these machines.

Cost of a Treadmill Industry Wide

The cost of a treadmill can range anywhere from $100 to over $5,000 CAD. A breakdown of treadmill cost ranges compared with the quality and experience you can expect is roughly as follows:
    • Budget: $100 - $1000
    • Medium: $1000 - $2000
    • High Quality: $2000+
A budget treadmill would likely be made by a disreputable brand, include only the most basic features, lack safety, as well as ensure that you'll either be making another purchase down the road, or give up on the idea altogether. As another consequence, you may not reach your desired fitness goals. We'd like to help you avoid that outcome!

Any of the treadmills we offer at AKFIT meet or exceed our definition of the minimal requirements for a satisfying and effective cardio workout experience. If you have any questions, consult our team today.
