    HOW DO I FIND THE RIGHT EXERCISE EQUIPMENT?

    Naturally, many things go into selecting equipment, from its purpose, to your personal condition, to the space where you intend to place it. It's also not always completely obvious to everyone what does what. That being said, here are some basics:

    CARDIOVASCULAR HEALTH & WEIGHT LOSS

    In general, a good cardio workout includes a mixture of moderate and intense activity. Equipment that offers programs with varying inclines and resistances will help achieve this. Treadmills or Ellipticals are both great options. And if you want to really get serious, there are High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) options like Dual Action Bikes. Our simplest advice is that the most effective equipment is the equipment you're actually going to use. If it's not comfortable, if it's not fun, if you won't do it consistently... then you will likely not get the results you want.

    BUILDING STRENGTH

    In building strength, you have three groups of muscles to consider when selecting appropriate equipment: Upper body, lower body, and core. There are great all-in-one home gyms which are pulley driven with built-in weight stacks and which target the majority of these groups depending on pulley position or use of included attachments.

    If you're after something more specific, you can find a great selection of single or multi-use stations under AKFIT's Strength category as well as freeweights which are still one of the best tried and true methods for pumping up those pipes!     BUILDING ENDURANCE

    Here are some options you might find interesting to build your endurance. Each uses a slightly different approach:

    1. Climbers & Steppers. Stair climbing is one of the most well known endurance-building exercises known to humankind! This can be a great option if you're looking for a challenging exercise without bothering everyone in the building.

    2. Plyometric Boxes. Similar in principle to the stepper but far more simplified and a little more versatile, plyo boxes allow you to not only climb but also jump or do other resistance exercises, like pushups, in different positions to challenge the body.

    3. Weight Vests. Weight vests are just like they sound - they add weight to your existing movements in order to increase the challenge. Very versatile!

    LOW-IMPACT / EASY ON JOINTS

    There are a few really good options for cardio training that's forgiving on the joints, and perhaps the most popular is the Elliptical. Ellipticals allow you to keep your feet firmly planted and the legs moving in a smooth, elliptical motion while getting the heart rate up to burn fat efficiently. If you prefer sitting, any of AKFIT's selection of Bikes will offer the same, and it's more a question of posture and the type of experience you want. More like a road bike? Go with an Indoor Cycle / Exercise Bike. More comfortable? Try an Upright Bike or Recumbent Cycle.

    Finally, Rowing machines are a great alternative which will engage your core and upper body, relying less on repetitive leg movement.

    REHAB & RECOVERY

    When recovering from any type of injury, exercise is a key part of the process, and as such, virtually any type of exercise that does not aggravate the injury will be beneficial. After spending time immobilized, dealing with muscle tears, dislocations etc, you may want to focus on gently rebuilding strength and mobility. Fitness Bands are a great way to start that allow you to do both, and they work equally well for both arms and legs. For more serious rehab, a Functional Trainer will provide a variety of movements and precise control of resistance.
